The UW women’s
barefoot team scored big… beating all other team performance score
totals (including totals for the men’s teams!!)… propelling their
school on to the grand Tommy Bartlett Collegiate Extreme prize… free
use of a 2004 Mercruiser powered Malibu Sportster boat (complete with
wedge and tower)… courtesy of Malibu Boats!
Led by newly crowned
national collegiate barefoot champion Liz Flaherty, the UW team also got
excellent performances from third place finisher Teri Larson, as well as
Teri Bell, Melanie Cyra, and Beth Krutchen.
Competition consisted of tricks and wake crossings, and world ranked
barefoot jump competitor Nikki Sobliere,
from
Florida
Southern, took second place.
A first place finish by
the UW men’s wakeboard team over number two, UW Whitewater and third
place UW LaCrosse… combined with a third
place by the UW men’s barefoot team behind UW Stout and UW LaCrosse
(first and second respectively), put a lock on the combined overall
title at the second annual Tommy Bartlett Collegiate Extreme
Championships, held September 10-12 at the famous
Tommy Bartlett Show stadium in the Wisconsin Dells.
The level of
competition was great everywhere, as Ryan Boyd, USA World Barefoot Team
member from West Virginia Wesleyan, won the men’s individual barefoot
crown. Additionally, three time national collegiate women’s champion,
Lauren Bowman from Florida Southern College, won the women’s wakeboard
crown. Ben Carley, representing Century
College of Minnesota, took home top honors in men’s wakeboarding.
This event played host
to a combined 107 collegiate competitors in both barefooting and
wakeboarding as 14 universities were represented. This was the first
competition for 5 students from the newly formed Marquette University
Water Ski and Wakeboard Team.
Lindsey Keep of the
University
of
Memphis
(fourth in men’s barefoot) received a special Mike Seipel
Spirit Award… a Barefoot International Iron Mike wet-suit. Mike was
totally impressed that, not only did he drive (solo) the 10 1/2 hours to
get to Tommy Bartlett’s, but back in
Memphis
, Lindsey is the leading force behind the newly formed
University
of
Memphis Water Ski
, Barefoot, Wakeboard Team.
Barefoot
International-Fly High also provided the winning barefoot and wakeboard
schools a full compliment of equipment consisting of a BI boom, Fly
High, Fat Sack, pump, and BI rope and handle. Almost 75 door prizes were
given away, supplied by many other industry supporters. Everyone who
stayed through the awards ceremony went home with a gift. Everyone went
home a winner!
The entire event was
filmed by Discover Wisconsin Productions, courtesy of sponsor Mercury
Mercruiser, so look for highlights in the future. The Tommy Bartlett
Collegiate Extreme Championships have a five year commitment from both
Tommy Bartlett’s for use of the site and the American Barefoot Club in
keeping the Collegiate Barefoot Nationals here… always the weekend
after Labor Day. See you next year!
