| Day
3 was packed with jumping excitement as the Open Men took to the
jump. Several great jumpers such as Ben Harris from Great Britain,
Adin Daneker, Brian Bumgarner, and Chris Morrison, couldn't land a jump,
while other jumpers such as Paul McDonald and Heinrich Sams made it look
effortless.
The Beast from the East "Bill Brzoza" came into the Nationals with torn ligaments in his left shoulder, but as always, Brzoza doesn't let a little pain get in his way. He gutted it out and landed a 72 foot jump that puts him into the finals on Saturday. He spent the rest of the day at the hardware store rigging up a sling that would keep his shoulder from hyper-extending during the finals. Ron Scarpa and Keith St. Onge were only inches apart with Keith winning day 1 with a 71.9 ft jump and Ron landing a 71.2 ft jump. Kevin Williamson, from the Eastern Region, had a great jump day as he tied the US National Open divsion jump record by landing a 70.3 ft jump. The rest of the day was filled with Boys and Girls tricks. It was exciting to see all the new young faces competing at the Nationals. I had some fun with the Boys 2 & 3 competitors. I challenged the boys to try a front to back at the end of each of their trick passes. Any boy that attempted a Front to Back in their run would win a brand new US Gear Front Toe Trick handle. To my surprise, DJ Williams, a first time Nationals competitor from the Eastern Region tried it almost immediately in his trick run. Then Anthony Collica, from the Midwest, who's all of 10 years old and 50 lbs socking wet, got out there and did 3 turns in his trick run. Then Nolan Lough couldn't be left out of the action, so he through one at the end of his trick pass. The crowd was as excited as the kids were. |
