Event Overview
We plan to run our first
barefoot endurance relay challenge from Wardell to Woodburn on Sunday morning the 5th of March starting at 7am
on the Richmond River. On Saturday we'll arrive at Woodburn which will
be where we'll stay the night at the Rod and Reel Hotel. We can have our
skiers meeting there. Saturday will see us having runs on the Richmond
river for fun and a bit of practice. I think our biggest problem will be
keeping some of the boys off the piss on Saturday night! All the Tweed
River Water-ski Club members will be there also as we will be running
our event before their main ski race that morning. This
mob have all the big expensive race gear from big block blown Chevs
running on alcohol to outboards and everything in between. After our
endurance relay, we'll get to kick back and watch theirs. I have heard they may be
having some barefoot drags as well!
We are told that the distance from Wardell to Woodburn is 20km. This
should be plenty long enough for our first run. Woodburn is situated
approximately 2hrs south of the Gold Coast and 8hrs north of Sydney. It
would be no more than 3kms from the coast. The area is widely known for
it's Sugar Cane, Beef, Dairy and Timber industry. The towns key industry
nowadays is sawmilling. Back in the days
of it's settlement being the 1830's, the wool industry underwrote the
areas prosperity. It became a popular
stopover for travelers when Steamers thronged the river and even had a
shipbuilding yard. The steamboats were used for the transport of just
about everything from the coast the inland ports of Grafton, Lismore and
Casino. There is a Richmond River Cane festival every year in May at
Wardell.
We hope to have four teams running on the day with the prospect of a
girls only team but we'll have more of an idea the closer we get. It is
a nice big wide river and four boats side by side will fit no problems.
At that time of the morning it would be very surprising if the water was
less than mirror finish flat! Being on
the coast the land area is very flat with Cane Fields all about you and
the mountains rise up in the distant west. They are both pretty small
towns. If you blinked while driving through you'd miss it!
