| Scores Posted in Medal Run-offs Don't Count - Should They? |
| Chuck, I would like to ask your opinion and to see if you think this is a worthy topic for Barefoot Central. This year, the rules for resolving ties for medal placement were all changed to run-offs. The merits of that decision good or bad are not the issue. The issue for me is that the scores that are skied in a run-off are considered to be disposable. They are not recorded, they are simply used to resolve the tie and then thrown out. I know and agree with the fact that the scores can not be used to calculate overall, there is a specific rule against that C503. However, the rules for throwing them out completely and not using them for records or standings list scores are sketchy at best (I'm being quoted C202 and C1702). I've read them repeatedly and don't see how they fit. Here's my dilemma. It hasn't happened yet, but what if one of those scores is a record? How would the skier feel if they are told after fighting it out in a run-off to be told, "nice job, too bad we can't submit it for as a potential record." While this is probably a small number of people that this would affect, I'd hate to see it happen. The more realistic example would be the person who skies a PB in a run-off and that score would not go on the Standings List or be used for seeding, etc. Somehow I just don't see where this is skier friendly at all. Maybe I just have a weird perspective, maybe skiers don't care what happens to their run-off scores. That's why I'm coming to you. I'd really like to know if I'm fighting a battle with a windmill. Thoughts? Jan Jan: As a skier, I would hope that anytime someone is competing in an official event, whether it be in a run-off or not, the scores they post would count and be recorded, especially if it's a record or PB. The pressure of a run-off could be much higher than the actual competition itself, so scoring a PB or record is that much tougher. I agree with your thoughts.
