- Each member of the team must ski in rotation. After the completion of a turn, a skier may not ski again until his/her entire team has skied. Each member of the team must ski at least one time during the race, in rotation. Teams must consist of at least four skiers. You may not compete with less than four active skiers.
- Barefoot skiing position must be obtained in a reasonable amount of time
(within 10 seconds of take-off) by the skier after the start. Butt riding for the purpose of advancing the position of the boat or for the skier to rest will not be allowed.
Momentarily butting out to negotiate boat rollers is
NOT allowed. Once the skier is on his/her feet, they must stay on
their feet until they fall or let go. Tumbling up from a start or a fall is allowed, tumble turns are not. You may ski backwards or forwards on your feet. Surface turns
and toe holds are permitted. We encourage as
much showing off as possible.
- This is a long line barefoot relay race. You must use an AWSA approved rope that attaches to the center pylon that places the skier at least 50 feet behind the boat. No devices are allowed that alter the length or position of the rope from the center
pylon while the skier is skiing.
Rope length adjustments can only be made while the boat is not
advancing and must remain at least 50 feet behind the boat.
- You must ski only on your bare feet. Not booties, shoe skis, tape, or anything that covers any portion of your foot is allowed.
- You may not retrieve a skier while the boat continues to advance its position in the race. The boat must be placed in neutral when retrieving a downed skier.
- You may not pull a skier to the boat while he is hanging onto the rope and the boat is moving forward.
- You must have a skier in the water attempting a start or skiing to advance your position.
- You must use an AWSA approved tournament tow boat. This includes older tow boats that have received approval in previous years. Different propeller/engine combinations, other than the original specified, will be allowed.
- No lead boats, lag boats, pick up boats, or breaker boats are allowed. Your entire team must remain
in the boat at all times with the exception of the skier whose turn it is. If you have people who want to watch they may not run along side your boat.
- You must finish with the same skiers you started with. No substitutions are allowed once the race has started.
- You must field the same team in all
rounds of a multi-day event.
- Each team must provide, and accommodate for, an observer to be placed in the boat.
- Physical contact with another team’s tow boat, equipment, or skiers – whether intended or not – is not allowed and is grounds for disqualification. This isn’t NASCAR.
- Safe boating practices must be adhered to at all times. You must stay a safe distance from other boats and skiers. You must keep your own skier in site at all times. All applicable AWSA rules must be followed concerning safety.
- Drivers must give
advancing boats adequate and safe space to perform a pass. If
an advancing boat is far enough behind your boat, you can force them
to cross your wake by zigzagging in front of them as long as it does
not put your skier in jeopardy. Once the advancing boat is
within 3-4 rope lengths behind your boat and still advancing, you
must provide enough space between your boat and the shoreline (or
course buoy) to allow the advancing boat to pass.
- You must use ABC approved equipment for the race. If in question, ask.
- If you are in
doubt that the maneuver you are about to perform is safe or not,
Don't Do IT! Please ski safe!
THE START:
We are encouraging all
races to adopt the "Platform Step-Off" start
that was introduced at the Tin-Top Cup Series Race
in 2005. This start method requires
skiers to stand on the back decks and not go into the water until the
starting horn blows. All boats must then fast idle to tighten the
line, and then take off. For more
information, click on the the following link:
Click
here to see video of start
We'll also
recommend having a "Black
Flag Boat" positioned at least 1/2 mile down
course. If any boats vier too far out of their lane at the start,
a black flag can be pulled requiring a Re-Start.
We also
strongly encourage having a pick-up boat following the race that can
also be used an an alternate race boat should any team happen to break
down during the race.
- Starting position will be drawn randomly and your team will be assigned a lane to start in prior to the race.
- The start of the race will commence when all boats have attained sufficient spacing between them, the boats themselves are aligned, and the skiers are in the water with ropes tight.
- Each driver will signal readiness by raising a cap when the skier is ready. The judges’ boat will then start the race with a shotgun blast.
- During the start, you MUST remain in your lane at all times. This is especially true when recovering a downed skier. You must
allow your boat to drop off a place before turning to recover a skier and you must not interfere with the path of another boat. “Bat turns” at the starting are not allowed.
THE FINISH:
- The finish line will be identified to
all skiers. You must ski past the judges’ boat. The clock will stop when the skier passes the finish line. Style points for spectacular finishes will be awarded at the finish line and will count towards absolutely nothing later on.
SAFETY:
- Should a serious injury occur, DO NOT ATTEMPT TO MOVE THE SKIER!!! You must stop the boat and immediately notify the
Emergency Medical Technician (EMT).
- Leave the skier in the water and remain with him/her until the EMT arrives.
- Do not attempt to finish the race with a seriously injured skier.
RULES INTERPRETATION:
- In the event an interpretation of the rules is necessary, the chief judge
or race organizer will meet for advisement with the team captains from the individual teams that would be directly affected by a ruling. All rulings by the chief judge will be final. In the event the chief judge would directly benefit from a ruling, he will defer to the race director for interpretation.
If Cup Series Teams are involved in a dispute, BarefootCentral's Cup
Series Committee will meet to determine if points will need to be
adjusted as a result of any local ruling.
PROTESTS:
- Protests must be filled within a reasonable time prior to or after the finish of the race to be considered valid.
- Protest must be filed by the team captain to the chief judge
or race organizer in person.
- Protests will be considered only if they are deemed to have appreciably affected the outcome of the race.
- Protests will be dealt with in the same manner as “rules interpretation”.
Last, but not least, you must have fun. Any team found not to be having fun will be severely admonished. Any team that threatens or is involved in physical violence will be immediately ejected from the race and will not be allowed to return. You didn’t drive hundreds of miles to whine and complain, so ski, eat, drink, and enjoy yourself!
