South Africa
GAUTENG NORTH CHAMPIONSHIPS
by Eugene Sam

When:      5 - 7 January 2006
Where:
Bronkhorstspruit, South Africa

Heinrich Sam, Keith St. Onge, and Andre de Villiers

Another year of skiing has started with the first tournament hosted by Gauteng North. The championships were held at Bronkhorstspruit and was well attended, receiving entries from Austria , Ireland , France , USA and Germany.

The tournament was marked with some outstanding performances from our local and international skiers, in the junior division the to Bauwens brothers impressed us all with great performances in both slalom and tricks scoring PB's in all their events . Garth Strydom started the season on a high with great slalom and trick PB. The trip to the EAME championships has paid off as these skiers came back from this tournament much more determined and motivated so all looks well for the future of our juniors.

Then came the big guns Andre de Villiers , Heinrich Sam ,and Keith St Onge and these guys have pushed the bars to new levels. Andre tricked up a storm tricking a new pending world record 10430, still the only skier to go over 10000 points. Not to be left behind came Heinrich and slalomed 19,2 19,6 19,8 to almost become the 1st ever South African skier to break the 20 barrier in the process setting 3 pending world records and making him one of the premier slalom skiers in the world. He backed these scores up with a trick score of 8800, we are looking forward to what he will be up to for the rest of the year. Then came the USA visitor Keith St Onge and took slalom skiing to new levels scoring the highest score ever 21,8 and in the process setting 3 pending slalom records, all in all, a great tournament with lots of PB's being set!
