Footer Neckwear
What I'm introducing here I hope will help revolutionize the sport and help reduce the amount of serious injuries and pain associated with barefoot waterskiing. I came up with the idea of this neckbrace after experiencing a severe neck injury while training for the 1998 Nationals. While doing back one-foot wakes, I caught a heel and herniated a disk in my lower neck C6/C7. I became paralyzed from the neck down for approximately 10 minutes. That's an experience I hope noone else ever has to go through. The most interesting thing about my accident was that I was wearing a neckbrace when I fell. After explaining to my Neurosurgeon that I hurt myself barefoot waterskiing, he asked to see the neckbrace I was wearing at the time of my fall. I showed him the one I was wearing as well as all the others that are currently available to barefooters. My doctor informed me that the seriousness of my injury may have been exaggerated by the neckbrace I was wearing. That aroused my curiosity to say the least. My doctor went on to explain that the purpose of a neckbrace is to keep your head from moving either up&down or side to side. The existing neckbraces available today don't limit you from turning your head side to side, and only marginally limit the up and down motion of your head. He went on to explain that by wearing a tube-like brace only restricts the movement in the upper neck, and forces the lower neck (C6/C7) to be the hinge point and take all the force of a hard fall.
