NATHAN AUST, from Dallas, Texas was selected as the
February 2003 Footer of the Month

Here's why:

Dear Barefoot Central:

I would like to nominate my husband Nathan Aust for Barefooter of the Month. He has really been working hard this year and has come a long way in his footing.  Sun, rain, or freezing cold, he's up for the challenge and out on the water.  I am very proud of his progress!  Thanks to many hours on the Brazos with Paul Stokes, he now has a passion for the sport that will never die!  Heck!  He's even got me doing it, and that's a feat within itself.  He was elected the Brazos Barefoot Club President in 2002, and he is extremely dedicated to promoting the sport. I hope you will consider him.  I believe that he is truly deserving of this honor.

Yours Truly,
Jena Aust

In addition to Jena's email, I wanted to note a few of my own reasons for picking Nathon.

I met Nathan sometime in early 2002.  He contacted me to let me know that I would be welcome at any of his club's weekly meetings.  He knew I lived in Dallas, but we had never met because I ski on a section of the Brazos River about 50 miles north of his ski spot.

I got to know Nathan after attending several tournaments put on by the Brazos Barefoot Club and even more while preparing for the 2002 Dam-to-Dam.  To go along with his passion for skiing despite the weather, he also carries with him a deep desire to compete and be the best.  He and Phillip Damuth set out to win and 2002 Dam-to-Dam, and they did just that.  One thing we all noticed about Nathan was he was determined to train harder than any other competitor.  If he lost the Dam-to-Dam, he didn't want to think to himself that he could have given more time, effort, or determination to the task of preparing for the race.  We (Team Barefoot Central) raced his team several times to simulate what the real race would be like.  Every practice race was fought as hard as the real thing, Nathan made sure of that.  When everyone else was to tired to stand, Nathan was always asking for more.  A little extreme you think?  Maybe to some, but to those of us that watched his team accept the 1st place trophy.  It was all worth it from the smiles seen on their faces (below).

Congratulations Nathan for being selected the 2003 February Footer of the Month.  You are the first to become  eligible to become the 2003 Footer of the Year.  May 2003 be as rewarding to you as was 2002.  But don't count on winning another D2D.  Team Barefoot Central will be giving you a run for your money.

Chuck Gleason

L to R: Phillip Damuth, B-Mike Brasher, F-Greg Daggerpont, and Nathan
