Lorie Phillips, of San Antonio, Texas was selected as the February 2001 Footer of the Month.  Here's why:

In the Fall of 1999, Lorie expressed an interest in learning to foot.  She grew up in a water-ski family with two brothers who from time to time would kick off their slalom ski for a little footing.  Growing up she tried several times to get up on her feet but to no avail.  She always wished that she could learn to foot and secretly wanted to do something better than her two brothers.  So, in October of 1999 for her birthday, her husband Curtis bought her a day clinic with Keith St.Onge on Lake Medina, near San Antonio.

Her first day out she borrowed a man's barefoot suit (which was too big) and nervously took her place in the rotation along with 3 other accomplished footers.  After a few falls she quickly learned some of the more punishing aspects of learning to foot but was undeterred.  She was so sore the next few days she could barely move.  Though she only got up on the boom and short-line, she was hooked.

It's been just over a year since Lorrie and Curtis learned to foot.    When she got home from the clinic with Keith, she informed Curtis of the insane-sounding event called the Dam-2-Dam in Austin.  In November of 1999, they drove to Austin to visit with footers and learn more about the sport and the D2D.  She told Curtis as we headed back to San Antonio that she was making it her goal to compete in the 2000 D2D race.  This past November, both she and Curtis brought their boat to Austin, assembled a team, competed, and finished their first Dam-2-Dam race, thus achieving Lories's goal.

While admittedly shy about cold water, even with a drysuit on, Lorie never passes up an opportunity to ski.  She and Curtis own a Flightcraft and manage to get to the lake anytime they think there may be glass.  Just a month ago, Lorie nailed her first one-foot and is now doing them with relative ease.

Lorrie is my inspiration for being a better footer and I have the added benefit of being married to my best friend and training partner.  I have always admired her determination and the amount of effort she puts forth to overcome obstacles.  While not the most advanced footer on the water, she's motivated, hard-working and most of all, fun to ski with (she's cute, too).

One more thing.  In her spare time, Lorie is the mother to four daughters ages 9,7,3 and 2 years.  She's a Toe-Smokin Barefoot'n Mom.  Congratulations Lorie, on being selected the February 2001 BarefootCentral.com Footer of the Month.   You are now eligible to win the "Mack Daddy" of all prizes.  Next January, you could be voted by your peers to be the 2001 Barefoot Central Footer of the Year.
