Jan Honsinger, of Houston, Texas was selected as the
July & August 2000 Footer of the Month.  

Anyone who has been competing at tournaments in the last 8-9 years has most likely run into Jan.  She is one of the most dedicated supporters of this sport.  She is definitely proven that she has a deep passion for the sport of barefooting.  How else can you explain why she likes to coordinate, judge, and be the person everyone looks for when problems arise during the day at a tournament.  I shutter to think what would happen if Jan didn't show up at a tournament in the South Central Region.  She is someone you can always count on to be there.

Although Jan spends most of her time at a tournament judging and coordinating, she is also a very accomplished barefooter.  Some of her most recent accomplishments include:

• 3rd Place in 1996 Dam-to-Dam
• 1st Place in 1997 Dam-to-Dam
• 2nd Place in 1999 Dam-to Dam
• 1999 Senior Worlds Competitor
• Scored her personal best in Tricks at the Senior Worlds (960 pts)
• Scored her personal best in Jump at the Senior Worlds (29 feet)
• Scored 6.8 in Wakes at the Senior Worlds

According to Jan's husband Tad, she learned how to barefoot in 1986 when they owned a bright Orange Ski Centurian.  When Jan learned how to go backwards 1988, she rarely went forwards again until 1992 due to water going up her nose on the starts.   Tad says she finally had to give in when she started competing in 1992, but due to her lack of practice forwards, he described her form as plowing like a John Deer tractor.

Jan started judging and scoring in 1992 and has risen through the ranks to Senior Judge ranking.  She has help organize many tournaments in the South Central Region as well as Nationals over the past 9 years.

If you are at a tournament that Jan is skiing in, you will notice everyone stopping to watch when she does her back deep start.  She is one of the only competing footers left that starts backwards by letting the boat get up to near full speed before she puts her feet in.  It makes all the guys cringe and girls yell "You go girl" as she passes by.
