BOB
LAREAU
from Chisago City, Minnesota was selected as the
July 2004 Footer of the Month
Here's why:
Most of you, whether you are a competitive barefooter or not,
are probably familiar with Bob LaReau. He was featured on the full-page
back of Waterski Magazine a few years ago hovering over a casualty alligator that fell victim to one of
Scarpa's Malibu's while Bob was in Florida skiing with Ron. Others may recognize Bob as the
2003 Mens IV
National Trick Champion. I have had the pleasure of knowing Bob and his
wonderful family for four years. I first heard of Bob's presence when some fellow skiers came back from a local tournament exclaiming that a
guy had just moved to the Midwest from Colorado and he was doing two flips in his trick runs.
I thought for sure they were joking...after all, how many Mens IV competitors had I seen doing flips since I began tournament barefooting in 1992 - zero, zilch. After meeting Bob at a
tournament, I became a believer. The guy is a footn' machine!
I got to be good friends with Bob and we also became training partners.
It was Bob's inspiration of never being too old to learn new tricks, that pushed me to start scoring toe ups at tournaments after being well into
Mens III. After all, no excuses are acceptable for not trying something after watching Bob learn his front to back surface turns past the ripe
age of 50 years plus. Bob has a tremendous work ethic and deserved to win the 2004 National trick title - don't be surprised if he breaks the
National Mens IV trick record - we've seen him ski it numerous times in practice!
We here in the Midwest are sad that Bob recently decided to move his family to Florida - we are going to miss him!
Bob is the type of person that attracts friends wherever he goes...whether moving from
city to city across the US (I've seen more visitors than I can count step into his boat over the past four years) or always taking the time
to teach his neighborhood kids to foot with an overabundance of patience.
Being around people like Bob, his wife Kim and daughters Nicala and Taylor, are what keep people interested in the sport of barefooting - good friendships and great memories.
For all that he is, all that he has accomplished, and all that he does, I can't think of a barefoot waterskier more deserving of Footer of the Month and Footer of
the Year, than Bob LaReau.
Thanks,
Rod Negus (aka 'Gus')
